Leakage & UFW
With growing demand and increasing regulatory pressure, proactive leak detection is essential. Occutrace specialises in DMA excellence, non-consuming meters, and unauthorised use. Our expertise can enhance revenue accuracy and optimise water efficiency, providing clients with reliable metering insights.
We are experts in resolving fundamental data problems that water and other utility companies need to address

What’s the challenge?
Currently, around a 20% of water running through pipes is lost to leakage, a situation that Ofwat expects water companies to significantly improve. Ofwat has challenged water companies to reduce leakage by at least 15%. By 2050, we’ll need an extra 250 million litres of water every day to support our growing population. Leaks waste thousands of litres of this precious resource, which water companies need to work hard to protect. Therefore, being proactive about spotting and fixing leakage and unaccounted-for water is vital.
Occutrace tailors its services in District Metered Area (DMA) excellence, Non-Consuming Meters, Unaccounted-for Water, and Unauthorised Water Use to benefit clients aiming to tackle leakage and unaccounted-for water. We address issues in revenue accuracy, optimise water efficiency savings, and provide our clients with high-quality evidence about their metering portfolios.

District Metered Area
- Through District Metered Area (DMA) detailed analysis we help our customers to identify potential leakage and verify inaccurate consumptions.
- We work with a customer’s infrastructure systems and internal teams to deliver in-depth site investigations and best-in-class reporting of asset health checks. This gives customers confidence in their network’s asset reliability, helping to identify potential leakage, unaccounted for water use and inaccurate consumptions.
- Providing actionable insights to support asset health, leakage, Unaccounted-For Water and consumption accuracy.
Non-Consuming Meters
- Long-term non-consuming meters (NCM) results in inaccurate bills, financial burdens, and damaged customer trust. Investigating these meters helps companies take action and replace them, ensuring accurate consumption recording.
- Combining a mix of modern technology and traditional field research, we create a bespoke service to identify non-consuming meters. Gathering comprehensive evidence packs to support the submission of bilaterals to allow meter exchanges and begin recording accurate consumption.
- This delivers an enhanced understanding of your metering portfolio’s condition, water efficiency savings and billing accuracy.

Unaccounted-for Water
- Unaccounted-for Water (UFW) is the variation between the volume of water fed into a district network and the metered volume of water consumed by the customers. It’s the water that has been used but has not been accounted for in commercial terms.
- Physical site investigations and detailed reporting provide insight to unauthorised or unregistered connections. Investigative reporting highlights potential breaches of water usage that impacts water balance and revenue.
- We deliver demonstrable evidence of site supply arrangements to validate any additional actions that counter lost revenue or misleading consumption.
Unauthorised Water Use
- As water bills rise, unauthorised water use will increase, posing challenges for detection and management. It is a criminal offence as well as being costly to companies in terms of lost time and revenue.
- Focussing on large water consumption users to ensure the usage is correctly authorised is crucial to minimise losses. We provide investigative reports to identify potential violations of water usage, which can affect revenue.
- Implementing intelligence gathering processes backed by thorough research allows us to develop provide irrefutable, developing irrefutable evidence packs enabling clients to take action against lost revenue.
